The article examines Kapilar’s psychological approach in the Kurunthogai poems, showing how Sangam literature reflects the inner emotions of love, longing, separation, patience, and restraint. It argues that the akam tradition is deeply psychological, and that Kapilar uses natural imagery and dialogue to portray the mental states of the hero, heroine, and friend with great subtlety.
By analysing twenty-eight Kurinji poems, the study shows that the hero’s speech reveals desire, distress, and emotional conflict, the heroine’s speech expresses endurance, anxiety, and inner strength, and the friend’s speech demonstrates mediation, caution, and social intelligence. Overall, the article concludes that Kurunthogai is not only a literary work of love but also a rich text for understanding human psychology and emotional life.
