Abstract

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that 3.9% of the world’s adult population uses cannabis, which is equivalent to 180.6 million people worldwide. While cannabis use is legal in some countries, such as Canada and the United States, cannabis use is illegal in most countries, including our own. A meta-analysis of 66,816 cannabis users found that cannabis users were twice as likely to develop a serious mental health problem called psychosis than the normal population. Cannabis is a plant species called Cannabis Sativa. The harmful effects of cannabis are due to chemicals called cannabinoids. There are about 60 types of cannabinoids. Cannabis is most often consumed by smoking. The chemical tetrahydro cannabinol (THC), which is released from cannabis, enters the bloodstream through the lungs and reaches the brain within seconds. THC also accumulates in our body fat and slowly re-dissolves in our blood over several days. This article discusses the pathophysiology and harmful effects of cannabis on various organ systems in the body. It also describes the negative impact of cannabis on mental health of cannabis users. It also discusses the treatment modalities of cannabis dependence like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivation Enhancement Therapy and Contingency Management.
