Alcohol has been around since the beginning of time. In recent times, the number and amount of people who consume alcohol have been increasing steadily. In a meta-analysis of the results of the Alcohol Survey conducted in India from 2000 to 2020, it has been found that 12.5% of the people drink alcohol, 8.6% of the people drink alcohol to a high degree of risk, and 2.3% of the people are addicted to alcohol. Reasons such as friends' parties, social drinking encouraged by corporate culture, seeing alcohol as a form of entertainment, peer pressure are among the common reasons for a person to get into the habit of drinking. The habit of drinking alcohol at first starts as a game, and later on, it turns into frequent drinking, which in turn turns into alcohol addiction.The understanding of the harmful effects of alcohol and how addiction/ dependence develops, among the common people is not good. In 1976, doctors Griffin Edwards and Milton Gross discovered various symptoms that are seen in people addicted to alcohol. From that, they classified the symptoms of Alcohol Dependence Syndrome. This article discusses in detail the seven major symptoms of alcohol dependence syndrome and the consequences of addiction for a person at interpersonal, occupational and social levels.
