Agoraphobia is one of the several types of anxiety disorders. People with this type of anxiety disorder experience intense fear and anxiety when going to crowded or public places, fearing that they will be trapped there. This can lead to anxiety even when they actually think that they want to go to those places. They may also gradually avoid going to the places they are anxious about. Some people with this disorder may even experience sudden panic attacks. During a panic attack, the thought of “suddenly dying” can lead to symptoms such as extreme fear, palpitations, excessive sweating, and shortness of breath. Statistics show that approximately 12% of people are affected by agoraphobia. This article describes the diagnosis and clinical presentation of agoraphobia. Various treatment modalities including pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments are also discussed here.
