Sexual violence against children is a global phenomenon that transcends national borders and occurs in all countries. The future of the victimised children is greatly affected. Victims of sexual violence face many consequences including behavioural changes, increased sexual sensitivity, physical and psychological disturbances. A 2017 study on sexual abuse found that 5% to 18% of children have been sexually abused. Studies show that children aged 6 to 12 years are most likely to be sexually abused. 85% of child abusers are men, with the majority being in their 30s and 40s. Girls are generally more likely to be sexually abused than boys. Victims of sexual assault do not function well in the psychological sphere. As a result of their trauma, they are unable to trust others or speak openly. Hence, they often withdraw from relationships. On the contrary, some struggle with boundary setting and make themselves vulnerable in relationships. This article discusses in detail the psychological effects of childhood abuse on adult mental health. It also discusses in detail the psychopathology of child abuse victims those who develop substance use disorder, somatization disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder later in life.
