Abstract

When someone has thoughts of ending their life, it is called suicidal ideation. When this thought occurs, they also think about how they can end their life. For example, they may think about hanging themselves, taking poison, or jumping off a train. When such thoughts occur, their intention is not always to end their life. Sometimes suicidal ideation can occur without any intention. A person who has suicidal ideation will experience many changes in their speech, emotions, and actions. People who have suicidal ideation will most often tell others first. They will first express thoughts such as why they are here and how they would be better off if they were dead to their friends or family through their speech. This article discusses in detail the symptoms presenting in persons who attempt suicide, the causes of such suicidal ideation and various practical modalities of preventing it.
