Abstract

Dementia is a group of diseases which predominantly affects a person’s memory. Memory is the ability to remember an event or message and use it at the right time. This ability determines most of a person's successes and failures. There are various types of memory such as immediate memory, recent memory, long term memory, procedural memory, emotional memory and visuospatial memory. There are many reasons for memory loss. One of them is Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia. In 1906, German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer discovered changes in the brain of a patient who died of dementia. So, the name Alzheimer's was given to this disease because of the significant memory impairment it causes. This article discusses in detail the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. It also discusses the various risk factors in persons who are more prone to develop dementia, the method of diagnosing dementia, and the basic treatments for dementia. Finally, evidence-based ways to improve memory and prevent dementia are also discussed here.
