Abstract

It can be said that the biggest psychological problem of an individual in this current world is related to food. So, whether cutting down food to lose weight or eating excessively as per one's wishes, it is not today's generation that is doing it. We have been talking about psychological problems related to food for centuries. Today's youth have no limits on what they should eat and when they should eat. But in front of a scrutinizing society that makes fun of all this, we need to talk about the biggest mental health threat it causes. In eating disorders, extreme changes occur in the behaviours and emotions of those affected by this disorder which causes not only physical damage, but also psychological and social damage. Eating disorders are divided into several types namely- Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, Pica, and Rumination Disorder. This article discusses in detail the origin and epidemiology of eating disorders. The clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria and treatment modalities of different types of eating disorders are also discussed here.
