Abstract

This article highlights the strong connection between food, gut health, and emotional wellbeing. Nutrition Psychology explains how gut microbes play a crucial role in influencing mood, stress, anxiety, and depression. Through the Gut–Brain Axis, the gut and brain communicate bidirectionally, mainly via the vagus nerve. Imbalance in gut microbiota can disrupt the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, leading to low mood, mood swings, and heightened anxiety. Chronic stress further weakens gut lining and increases inflammation, contributing to both physical and psychological disorders. The article emphasizes that mental health support should not rely only on counselling or medication but must also include dietary changes, gut balance, and regular movement, which serve as biological signals of safety and healing. Thus, “food and emotions” are deeply interconnected through gut-based mechanisms.
