Abstract

In 1972, anthropologist Margaret Mett stated that in all societies in the world, a situation has been created where both husband and wife must live together. In India, in recent times, we have seen a high rate of separation and divorce between the married couples due to various reasons. In the past, it was the duty of men to earn money and the duty of women to take care of the family. Due to this, women had to depend on men to a large extent for their needs. But in recent times, due to the progress made in education, employment opportunities, and the economy, women have come to a point where they can meet their needs themselves. As a result, there is a feeling of equality between men and women and a healthy social environment. This independence has increased the separation and divorce rates among husband and wife. This article discusses in detail the process of separation between the married couples, the impact it has on the couples themselves and most importantly on the children of the couple. It also describes the psychological stages of children going through the parental separation and the practical strategies for those parents to help their children in real life settings.
