Abstract

Twenty-eight-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps, famous dancer Karina Smirnoff, Will Smith, and Stephen Hawking all suffer from ADHD. ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. ADHD is a long-term mental disorder. Children suffering from this disorder show three main symptoms- (1) Inattention, (2) inability to sit still and constantly moving around even when they should be quiet (Hyper Activity), (3) continually doing things in a hurry without thinking ahead (Impulsivity). If children with ADHD are not treated properly, they will not be able to achieve the goals they want to achieve in the future. This leads to low self-confidence, low self-esteem, and a reduced ability to tolerate criticism from others, making them more likely to suffer from mental illness. In a 2011 study of 750 children aged six to eleven years in a school in Coimbatore, it was found that 11% of children had ADHD symptoms. The study reported that 66.71% of the children were boys and 33.3% were girls. This article describes the epidemiology of ADHD in India. It also discusses in detail the symptoms of the two subtypes of ADHD namely- inattentive type and hyperactive/ impulsive type. A brief discussion of adult ADHD is also mentioned here.
